The East Neuk: What is it?
We often get asked what the “East Neuk” is – and more specifically, what “neuk” means.
It’s simple, really – “neuk” is the Scots word for “nook” or “corner”. And the “nook” in question is the lovely eastern corner of Fife that comprises the coastline from Earlsferry to Crail with its beautiful fishing villages and inland areas adjacent to the coast.
The harbour villages of Elie, Earlsferry, Colinsburgh, St. Monans, Pittenweem, Anstruther, Cellardyke, Crail and Kingsbarns are all part of the East Neuk, which you can explore by car or bike along the picturesque coast road between the corn fields and the sea – or walk the stunning Coastal Path.
